When Pancake Day arrives, most of us default to familiar favourites—sugar with lemon or a rich combination of Nutella, banana, and cream. However, there's a whole world of savoury possibilities waiting to be explored. Here are five tasty ways to elevate your pancakes beyond the usual sweet selections.
When Pancake Day rolls around, many of us instinctively reach for sugar and lemon or indulge in layers of Nutella, banana, and cream. But why not shake things up with some delicious savoury options? Here are five creative ways to enjoy pancakes beyond the usual sweet treats.
Smoked Salmon & Dill
Inspired by smoked salmon blinis, this dish takes those flavours to a new level. Mix cream cheese with chopped dill, finely diced shallot, and plenty of capers for a tangy kick. Generously spread this over your pancakes, top with smoked salmon, and finish with a squeeze of lemon for a brunch-worthy treat.
Bacon Maple Butter
A perfect blend of sweet and savoury, this take on classic bacon and maple syrup turns them into a rich, flavorful butter. Fry up smoked streaky bacon until crisp, then chop it finely. Whip softened butter, mix in the bacon along with a drizzle of maple syrup, and shape into a log using cling film. Chill until firm, then slice and let it melt over freshly cooked pancakes.
Stuffed Pancakes with Chicken & Mushrooms
A nostalgic favourite with a gourmet twist. Use thin crepes as a base and fill them with a creamy mix of poached chicken, sautéed mushrooms, and béchamel sauce. Enhance the flavour by adding rehydrated porcini mushrooms and using their soaking liquid in the sauce. Stir in fresh tarragon for an aromatic lift. Roll the filled pancakes, place them in a baking dish, cover with extra sauce and top with Taleggio cheese. Bake until golden and bubbling.
Ham & Cheese Galette
Traditionally made with buckwheat flour, this French classic is just as delicious as a standard crepe. Fill it with melted Comté or Gruyère cheese and layers of ham. For the full Galette Complète experience, crack a fried egg on top just before serving. Comforting, rich, and utterly satisfying.
Spinach Pancakes with Roasted Sweet Potato & Feta
Add a vibrant twist to your pancakes by blending fresh spinach into the batter for a beautiful green hue. Top with roasted butternut squash, crumbled feta, and finely chopped chilli for a mix of sweetness, creaminess, and heat. Sprinkle with spiced, roasted seeds for an extra crunch and flavour boost.
